RAFTING & ANGLING IN KUMAON
With
HiMADRi TOUR & TREKS

It is a land blessed with natural and cultural diversity-- a land where people still live with nature-- a land where trade once flourished between the great Himalayan Kingdoms. It is a land of heritage, festivals and rituals-- a land of snow fed rivers. It is KUMAON.

The rivers of Kumaon have never been opened for commercial rafting before. Therefore what you encounter in these rivers is the ancient culture of its inhabitants and vast stretches of untouched, unpolished landscape, teeming with wild-life and migratory birds like cormorants and siberian cranes.

the river, ever-moving, signifies life truly. Wild, un-explored, mysterious and beautiful--such is the course the river chooses. No better way to get such an 'in-sight' than to let yourself go!

It gives us a feeling of pride and joy to introduce river rafting in the Kumaoni rivers. We at K.M.V.N have set up a fully equipped river rafting unit together with experienced and skilled professionals to operate commercial rafting trips (for tourists) on the KALIGANGA and the SARYU/RAMGANGA (E).

THE RIVERS:

KALI GANGA--

Originating from Kalapani, the last immigration post on the Indo-Tibet border (on the Kailash Mansarover Yatra route) the Kaliganga actually demarcates the international boundary between India and Nepal. Together with its tributaries, the Kali forms the major natural drainage system of Kumaon and Western Nepal Himalaya.

The average grade of the river is class 3rd and the riverand our rafts flow past a kaleidoscopic landscape of terraced hills of Nepali and Kumaoni villages, distinctive in architecture and culture. Due to the absence of road communication, the river valley is lesser explored, with virgin beaches visited only by migratory birds and an occasional thirsty animal. Giving you an insight into the life-style, customs, traditions and religion of the local people, a rafting holiday on the Kaliganga promises to be an exhilarating experience with its 'thrills, chills and spills.

SARYU / RAMGANGA (E)--

The Ramganga (E) originates from the NAMIK glacier which is one of the most beautiful glaciers in the Kumaon Himalaya. Like its origin, the river follows a scenic route through a lesser inhabited valley, meets the Saryu at Rameshwar, and goes out to confluence with the Kali Ganga at Pancheshwar.

A rafting trip on the Saryu takes you past remote villages, giving an insight into rural Kumaoni life and a complete leisure rafting trip. The average grade of the river section is class 2nd with a few class 3rd rapids. It is therefore ideal for beginners and the leisure rafters. The rafting section is a 30 km. leisurely cruise on the emerald green waters down the river.

THE SELF-CONTAINED ASPECT:

Due to the absence of road support, we operate trips in the self-contained style i.e. the crew has to be self-sufficient in all aspects. Besides the rafters, the rafts will also carry alpine tents, tations, etc. You might even find an expert outdoor cook paddling along with you. After covering a day stretch, the crew sets up camp on a suitable site/beach for the night. Next morning, pack-lup and start the day's stretch.

In other words, once you start your trip, the river has you completely. You enter the unknown, unseen valley with its mysteries and find yourself right in the lap of nature, totally cut off from the madness outside. A self-contained trip adds greatlyl to your feeling of adventure, thrill and independence.

THE GRADING SYSTEM:

All the rapids are graded according to the difficulty of negotiation, and the risks involved. Proximity to the nearest road, temperature of water, danger from rocks, gradients of the river, and rescue situations are all taken into consideration while grading a rapid. The rapids are classified from Grade 1st to  Grade 6th.

Grade1st: very easy
Grade2nd: very moderate
Grade3rd: very difficult
Grade4th: very very difficult
Grade5th: very extremely difficult
Grade6th: very impossible / suicidal

SAFETY:

In order to ensure the safety of our participants/clients.

  • All our river runs are supported by professional rescue Kayakers.
  • Our river guides are adept at first-aid and can be banked upon for assistance of any nature.
  • All the equipment viz. rafts, Kayaks, paddles, life jackets, helmets are ideally designed for white-water running.
  • Last but not least—You yourself play an important role in your safety by listening carefully to the instructions given by the river guides, wearing properly the mandatory safety gear and avoiding use of alchohol before the trip.

                                         ANGLING
Incidently, for angling enthusiasts, Pancheshwar is El-dorado. The Kali is home to the famous Golden Mahasheer and promises excellent fish game. The only catch: you have to leave the big catches bock where they belong!

In pre-Independence times angling was a very popular pastime of the Britishers and was called the ‘great game’. The Golden Mahasheer, a sporting fish, is found in large numbers in the rivers and lakes of Kumaon. Fishing is allowed in Ghat (Saryu river), Pancheshwar (confluence of Kali & Saryu), jauljivi (confluence of Gori & Kali), Chuka (confluence of Ladhiya and Kali) and Boom (Sarda river) after due permission from the Officer-in-Charge of the area concerned.
